Francesca Morello<\/strong>, aka R.Y.F.<\/strong>, unveils herself with her second album, Shameful Tomboy<\/i><\/strong>, out today October 18, 2019\u00a0<\/strong>on the label Dio Drone<\/strong>, available on CD, all digital formats and limited-edition cassette. As the artwork suggests,\u00a0the ten songs on the tracklist are written on her skin, composed and played over the last two years.<\/p>\n

Based in Ravenna, R.Y.F. \u2013 the acronym stands for Restless Yellow Flowers and comes from Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 looks inside herself and takes position on very important topics. After the self-released EP\u00a0<\/span>Some Years Ago But Now\u2026\u00a0<\/em>of 2012 an the real solo debut Love Songs For Freaks & Dead Souls\u00a0<\/b><\/em>of 2016, dedicated to all the \u201cdifferent ones\u201d out there,\u00a0<\/span>Shameful Tomboy\u00a0<\/b><\/em>is her most personal work, recorded entirely in analog with vintage instruments and effects and based on a minimal blend of neofolk, sadcore, doom rock and punk blues<\/strong>, with a dark yet warm sound, at the same time rough and melodic. Going back to a background rooted in the 90s<\/strong>, from PJ Harvey to Nirvana, from The Smashing Pumpkins to Tool.<\/p>\n

R.Y.F. does everything on her own<\/strong>, dividing herself between brutal\/intimate singing<\/strong>\u00a0and electric or acoustic guitars<\/strong>.\u00a0The only contribution is from Roberto Villa<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 responsible for the recordings that took place on tape at L\u2019Amor Mio Non Muore studio in Forl\u00ec \u2013 which added double bass on the spectral track Raised To Kill<\/em>, almost in line with Chelsea Wolfe: \u201cWe were raised to kill \/ All we have inside<\/em>\u201d. Raised To Kill\u00a0<\/em>is connected with the essential autobiographical pathos of the title-track,\u00a0first new song to have been written: \u201cShameful Tomboy\u00a0talks about the first slap I received from society, just five years old. At the time I attended an asylum run by nuns and one of them accused me of being <\/i><\/span>\u2018<\/i><\/span>shameful<\/i><\/span>\u2019\u00a0<\/i><\/span>because, as a little fan of the cartoon\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/i>He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, I wanted to play with my reproduction of the castle of <\/i>Grayskull\u00a0<\/em>together with my companions: a <\/em><\/i>\u2018<\/em>tomboy<\/em>\u2019\u00a0<\/em>behaviour,<\/em> considered\u00a0<\/em>sufficient to destabilize gender roles..<\/em>.<\/em>\u201d. <\/em>According to the lyrics: \u201cYou called me shameful tomboy \/ And I was only 5<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The record is a manifesto against intolerance and prejudice, against the religious sense of guilt induced by deceptive rules. Other key episodes are Queer Riot<\/em>, a manual of \u201cresistant withcraft\u201d (\u201cWe need to shout louder \/ Because they don\u2019t understand<\/em>\u201d), and the awareness with drum machine that evoke Nine Inch Nails and Peaches of\u00a0<\/span>1st Times<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(\u201cThen I realize I was really really gay \/ Cause I can love the world whatever sex it may be<\/em>\u201d), chosen as first single.<\/p>\n

R.Y.F.\u2019s\u00a0songwriting<\/strong>\u00a0is incisive and proudly\u00a0queer<\/strong>. \u201cI feel super armored, but also full of scars. To be queer is to be what we are, without any social conditioning. Being queer means breaking the fences that someone has decided to impose on others, it means giving back dignity to those who are deprived of equal rights and valuing the <\/em>\u2018<\/em>feminine<\/em>\u2019<\/em>, whick is outraged every day by patriarchy, by men as much as by women. At the cost of having to raise your voice.\u00a0<\/em>I felt dumb for a long time. But today things have changed: for me, music is a comfort and a communicative need<\/i>\u201d. It\u2019s time to listen to\u00a0<\/span>Shameful Tomboy<\/em><\/strong>: life is short and the future is queer!<\/p>\n
