Like all the best concept albums,\u00a0A Ride<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0takes you on a journey. This one concerns the last three days of an American runaway\u2019s life. Part road-trip, part engrossing mystery, part search for redemption, it\u2019s the fictional tale of a troubled man whose past comes back to haunt him.<\/p>\n

The origins of\u00a0A Ride<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0go back to 2015. On tour on the US, Phill Reynolds<\/strong> – AKA Italian alt-country singer-songwriter Silva Martino Cantele –\u00a0took in the shifting landscapes, the people he met and their stories. All of this fed into the album he recorded at the all-analogue TUP Studio in Brescia, near Milan. Reynolds played almost all of the instruments himself and co-produced\u00a0A Ride<\/em>\u00a0with long-term collaborator Bruno Barcella.<\/p>\n

Intricate, rapid-fire fingerpicking on the single\u00a0This Isn\u2019t Me<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0demonstrates Reynolds\u2019 dexterity, while his voice is a rich, fully-lived in instrument seasoned with the salt of experience, and strengthened by the 120 or so gigs a year he used to do before COVID took his one-man show off the road. According to Phill Reynolds,\u00a0This Isn\u2019t Me<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is “a\u00a0<\/em>journey into the distorted mind of a fugitive, an intermittent dialogue with a ghost woman, a spiral of nightmares and memories that cling to his own guilt, guilt like a wagon in a crazy rush towards the unknown, towards a light of redemption constantly in the distance<\/em>“.\u00a0The brand new\u00a0video<\/strong>\u00a0forThis Isn\u2019t Me<\/em>\u00a0was made experimentally by the students of Diskos in Schio, under the precious guidance of director\u00a0Corrado Ceron<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Long an inhabitant of picturesque Italian towns in the Vicenza province,\u00a0Phill Reynolds<\/strong>\u00a0was born in Marostica and currently lives in Zugliano.\u00a0He was only five when The Beach Boys\u2019\u00a0Barbara Ann<\/em>\u00a0worked its magic upon him via the radio. Later a fan of \u201890s Californian punk bands, Reynolds was writing and performing in his own post-hardcore bands by 13, but didn\u2019t make it to the nearest big city, Milan, until he was 19.\u00a0Bands still matter deeply to him.\u00a0But his love for\u00a0folk music<\/strong>\u00a0has deepened over the last decade or so, hence his solo act alter-ego.\u00a0Where did the name Phill Reynolds come from? “Everybody asks me this,<\/em>\u201d he smiles. \u201cEspecially in the UK.<\/em>\u00a0The truth is I needed an alternative name for a gig I was doing, and at the time I was in love with the music of Phil Ochs and Malvina Reynolds. Malvina Ochs didn\u2019t sound too good to me, so I became Phill Reynolds, and I like that, because it sounds like a normal person<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

So, the esteemed Italian label\u00a0Bronson Recordings<\/strong>\u00a0has released\u00a0his fourth solo album\u00a0A Ride<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0June 17th, 2022, on CD, vinyl and digital.\u00a0A Ride\u00a0<\/em>is the most ambitious and fully-realised Phill Reynolds album to date. He was assisted by Stefano Pilia (lead guitar on\u00a0Dive Bar Oblivion<\/em>), IOSONOUNCANE (backing vocals, synth, bass and field recordings on\u00a0World On Fire<\/em>), and C+C=Maxigross (bass, drums and backing vocals on\u00a0In The Dark<\/em>).\u00a0The record\u2019s story is a dark one, but not one without hope. \u201cEvery end is a new beginning<\/em>\u201d, says Reynolds.\u00a0\u201cOne of the main themes here is that life can be a sort of trap unless you recognise your own demons and try to deal with him. So we must be prepared and try to live well<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n
