Ignoto<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is the tenth album by\u00a0OvO<\/strong>, legendary Italian duo formed by\u00a0Stefania Pedretti<\/strong>\u00a0(?Alos, Allun) and\u00a0Bruno Dorella<\/strong>\u00a0(Ronin, Bachi da Pietra, Tiresia , GDG Modern Trio, Sigillum S). The album is out today\u00a0September 23rd, 2022<\/strong>\u00a0on CD, vinyl and digital via Canadian label\u00a0Artoffact Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Following\u00a0Miasma\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>– dating back to February 2020 – and the chaos afterwards, OvO felt the need of an album that would\u00a0be different from the others, that would have new elements, some of which might be refined in the future,\u00a0but also the need to continue the discourse that began with\u00a0Miasma<\/em>. In fact, if on one hand the band\u00a0continues to evolve as it has always done over its career of more than twenty years, on the other hand the\u00a0Miasma<\/em>\u00a0Tour was greatly compromised by the fact that the album came out right after the start of the\u00a0pandemic leaving the band with the desire to continue performing those songs during the next tour.<\/p>\n

Ignoto<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0contains\u00a0two tracks<\/strong>\u00a0both lasting over twenty minutes. In this sense the album could be described\u00a0as\u00a0doom<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0sludge<\/strong>\u00a0but with OvO nothing is ever that simple.\u00a0The\u00a0electronic elements<\/strong>\u00a0that have been present over recent years are still there and play important roles in\u00a0both pieces.<\/p>\n

Above all, however, the lyrics are composed of complete sentences in Italian, a thing which\u00a0rarely happened in the past. Stefania Pedretti took her inspiration from\u00a0science fiction and horror<\/strong>\u00a0classics\u00a0(Octavia E. Butler, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury, Clive Barker, Ambrose Bierce…) bringing out\u00a0the more esoteric side.<\/p>\n

The musical language dilates (and for this reason this album will most likely\u00a0remain unique in OvO’s discography) whereas the lyrical side is enriched with explicit meaning compared\u00a0to the past where the lyrics where left up to interpretation.\u00a0Ignoto<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0means\u00a0\u201cunknown\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in italian. It refers to what happened in the last two years in the world and to\u00a0the band members personally. Especially Pedretti experienced some major health issues that changed her\u00a0perspective on many things. But most of all it refers to what expects all of us next.<\/p>\n

First track\u00a0La Morte Muore<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Death Dies<\/em>) has four movements, the first being an electronic piece\u00a0introducing the whole lyrics. Those lyrics come and go in the following parts, the second being a long,\u00a0hypnotic sludge\/doom trip, the album’s manifesto, while the third turns the whole thing into something between a march and a\u00a0bolero, to enhance Stefania’s lyrics. The final part brings everything back to chaos.<\/p>\n

Second track\u00a0Distillati Di Tenebre<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Darkness Distillates<\/em>) has also four movements, the first being a sort of\u00a0black metal or crust assault, a kick in the face in OvO’s punk style, while the second brings in the proper lyrics in Italian, a visionary nightmare\u00a0in form of a sludge\/doom cavalcade. The synthesizers of the third and fourth parts are a slow, definitive\u00a0ride into the unknown, a disintegration into the Big Nothing.<\/p>\n

Distillati Di Tenebre (Part 1)\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0La Morte Muore (Part 3)\u00a0<\/em>mark also the beginning of the collaboration between OvO\u00a0and\u00a0video artist<\/strong>\u00a0Sara Dresti<\/strong>. “These are very dark tracks from a very dark album, and Sara has a very dark sight. She works at night, and somehow you can feel it.<\/em>\u00a0Sara will turn the whole album into a video project. So this is not only a commission, but a real artistic collaboration, where music and video are in a tight dialogue.\u00a0<\/em>The city. People. Animals. Night. An unsafe feeling. Everything seen through eyes that are not human<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

OvO<\/strong>\u00a0went through over two decades of noisy music, with a strength that’s not easy to explain, but\u00a0becomes very clear when seen live.\u00a0There is poetry behind their savagery. There is love behind their nihilism.<\/p>\n
