Francesca Morello<\/strong>, aka\u00a0R.Y.F.<\/strong>, releases today\u00a0September 10th, 2021\u00a0<\/strong>her new album\u00a0Everything Burns<\/strong><\/em>, out on CD, vinyl and all digital platforms for\u00a0Bronson Recordings<\/strong>, led by the singles\u00a0Cassandra<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Normal Is Boring<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Not Going Anywhere<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Thematically, R.Y.F\u2019s\u00a0Everything Burns<\/em>\u00a0is a radical confluence of\u00a0rage and joy<\/strong>; sonically, it is a pressure-cooked combo of\u00a0dance and punk<\/strong>. The fourth album from the solo project of Italy\u2019s Francesca Morello,\u00a0Everything Burns\u00a0<\/em>refuses to be confined by genre or emotional extremes, and is instead the synchronistic coexistence of opposites. It is music you could dance or destroy a room to, a cathartic balance of suffering and jubilation \u2014 an electropunk disco steeped in\u00a0queer, feminist subversion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis album is for people who feel uncomfortable because of what they are \u2014 because other people tell them they are wrong,<\/em>\u201d says Morello. Queer and nonbinary and speaking directly to an audience of the marginalized, Morello combines \u201cfiction and reality\u201d to imbue individual feeling into mythological battles, inviting listeners to see themselves in an ever-important and painful human struggle for survival and acceptance. \u201cI want people to know you are never alone, even if you feel that way sometimes. Know you are part of a big family.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything Burns<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0electrifies R.Y.F.\u2019s anti-patriarchal position with unrelenting support for the underclass and a defiant hope in the future the people can build together. Pain is weaponized, and vulnerability is redefined not as a weakness, but a threat to the ruling class. The result is an explosive testament to the power of community and unguarded artistic expression. \u201cEverybody has a role to play,<\/em>\u201d says Morello, \u201cMy message is my voice.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything Burns<\/em>\u00a0is R.Y.F.\u2019s first foray into\u00a0electronic music<\/strong>, and an homage to a period of explosive creativity and inspiration. With the pandemic forcing musicians off the road, Morello found herself at home working less with a guitar and more with synthesizers and drum machines, instruments she had long admired in avant-garde artists\u00a0like Moor Mother and Special Interest.<\/p>\n

Frustrated by the government\u2019s lack of support for artists and seeking a creative community, Morello auditioned at the internationally-acclaimed theater company\u00a0Motus<\/strong>\u00a0(MDLSX, Panorama, NELLA TEMPESTA),<\/em>\u00a0and began writing songs to pitch the group\u2019s upcoming production based on Jean Paul Sartre\u2019s adaptation of the Greek tragedy\u00a0The Trojan Women<\/em>. At the same time, Morello\u2019s label, Bronson Recordings, called to ask if she was working on an album. \u201cI said no, but I am working on this other thing,<\/em>\u201d says Morello.<\/p>\n

Morello advanced in the theater and began work on the album she would name after the english translation of the play,\u00a0Tutto Brucia\u00a0<\/em>(\u201cEverything Burns\u201d). She wrote every note and lyric in two weeks and completed the recordings with Andrea Cola (Sunday Morning)<\/strong> and under the supervision of multi instrumentalist and musician\u00a0Bruno Dorella (Ronin, OvO, Bachi da Pietra)<\/strong>\u00a0in two weeks more.\u00a0Mix and master of the record were then realized by\u00a0Maurizio Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher)<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cIt was really fast and really special. For the first time in 20 years, I finally felt free to let everything inside me come out,<\/em>\u201d says Morello, \u201cThere was no plan. It was like a work of inspiration that was burning inside of me.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

First single\u00a0Cassandra<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0originally written for the play, is both dark and disco, a party song evocative of Morello\u2019s new wave, post-punk influences like New Order and Le Tigre. \u201cI like the song not because of the tragedy, but because I think that women need to raise their heads and be proud of themselves,<\/em>\u201d says Morello, \u201cWe need to be a little bit crazy and out of control sometimes. It\u2019s time to take the powers back.<\/em>\u201d Over pulsating disco beats and plucking synths, R.Y.F. urges, \u201cwomen raise your head \/ be proud of yourselves \/ DANCE!!! \/ with the flame \/ much faster \/ with the flame \/ look at the sky.\u201d R.Y.F. and Motus continued their collaboration offstage for the\u00a0music video\u00a0<\/strong>Cassandra<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0directed by Motus and starring\u00a0Tutto Brucia<\/em>\u00a0actress\u00a0Silvia Calderoni<\/strong>. (Calderoni has also starred in Sky TV series\u00a0Romulus<\/em>, Gucci\u2019s latest series\u00a0Ouverture Of Something That Never Ended<\/em>, and Jonathan Nossiter\u2019s\u00a0Last Words<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The combustion slows down with\u00a0Muzik<\/em>‘s minimalism, an experimental ode to the saving communicative power of music, always at the center of R.Y.F.’s thoughts.\u00a0On the somber slow-burn\u00a0Pocket Full of Ashes<\/em>, another song written for the play, synths sparkle around a brooding guitar line that builds R.Y.F.\u2019s haunting vocals up to the cathartic refrain, \u201cmy pocket full of ashes, my pocket full of tears, my pocket full of fear, my pocket full of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morello\u2019s lyricism balances poetic observations with explicit and shocking commentary on sexism and gender. The title-track\u00a0Everything Burns<\/em>, a playful yet powerful send-up of discrimination, sees R.Y.F. mockingly deliver sexist and fatphobic insults (\u201care you a boy or a girl? \/ cuntboy,\u00a0 dickgirl\u201d) on every line except the last, when R.Y.F. declares, \u201cand everything\u00a0burns.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I really would like to burn a lot of things, bad things that are in this world, this society. Patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, racism\u2014burn all discriminations,<\/em>\u201d says Morello, \u201cI believe all discriminations start with the patriarchy, and I would like to burn them all down for the people to be happier\u2014and freer.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

R.Y.F. describes female suffering under the patriarchy that must burn on the grunge-tinged track\u00a0My Sis<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cMy sister, she wants to die… she wanna die like Kurt Cobain,<\/em>\u201d R.Y.F. croons in a voice similar to Cobain himself. \u201cBeing a woman, a girl, in this society is super difficult,<\/em>\u201d says Morello, \u201cTo be nice, to be cute, to say yes, to smile, all this stuff \u2014 it will drive you crazy because you can\u2019t be like that. No one can.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

R.Y.F. continues her celebration of the marginalized with the electro-experimental banger and transfeminist anthem\u00a0Don\u2019t Panic<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 an encouraging tribute to the strength and difficulty of coming out. The line \u201cYOU HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN BY ALIENS\u201d \u2014 repeated to the effect of a strobe-lit hypnosis or post-punk affirmation \u2014 alludes to Morello\u2019s experiences growing up non-binary. \u201cI felt like an alien,<\/em>\u201d she says, \u201cIt was traumatic. I wasn\u2019t happy for a long time.<\/em>\u201d When Morello finally left her small hometown at age 30, she felt like her \u201cmind was cleansed\u201d of the lies she was told, opening herself up to better understand and embrace herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes my hair is short, people think I am a man. Long hair, they think I am a woman. It is funny how people only look to the surface, they don\u2019t look deeper. I like to confuse people,<\/em>\u201d Morello says. \u201cI have a tattoo with this line, \u2018normal is boring,\u2019 because I think that there is nothing \u2018normal\u2019.<\/em>\u201d R.Y.F. amplifies that message on the aptly titled art-punk second single\u00a0Normal Is Boring<\/em><\/strong>, featuring So Beast<\/strong>, an upbeat mix of post-industrial rhythms and powerful vocals that sporadically glitch and distort.<\/p>\n

R.Y.F.\u2019s outlook remains festive throughout\u00a0Everything Burns<\/em>, and is especially so on the\u00a0electropop third single\u00a0Not Going Anywhere<\/em><\/strong>, a universal love song beyond the stereotypes of the couple relationship and a standout example of the record\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>effusive energy.\u00a0Not Going Anywhere\u00a0<\/em>video was shot by Simona Diacci Trinity.\u00a0Only lovers left alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry to destroy it,<\/em>\u201d Morello says to everyone suffering under patriarchy. And with\u00a0Everything Burn<\/em>s<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0R.Y.F.<\/strong>\u00a0has written the soundtrack to dance to while you\u2019re at it.<\/p>\n
