KICK release new cover of “Some Velvet Morning”, out now on Anomic Records/Dischi Sotterranei

Out today July 7th, 2022 via Anomic Records (Berlin, Germany) and Dischi Sotterranei (Padua, Italy), new cover of Some Velvet Morning was born from the collaboration between KICK, Italian duo from Brescia formed by Chiara Amalia Bernardini and Nicola Mora, and some members of fellow citizens Listrea (the singer and guitarist Fabio Pietroboni/Bafyo and the bassist Edoardo Serena/Pizzediliquirizia).

The choice of this song, written by Lee Hazlewood and made famous by him with Nancy Sinatra, is obviously not accidental: the four friends and musicians wanted to pay homage to a track that has been revisited several times in the course of the story by artists they love and follow, including Primal Scream, Slowdive, and Lydia Lunch with Rowland S. Howard.

Moving ambiguously between dream pop and psychedeliaSome Velvet Morning is furthermore perfectly connected to the issues facing in the second KICK’s album, Light Figures, released this year and led by the singles Setting Tina (featuring Scott Reeder from Kyuss and Fireball Ministry), Sirens Never SleepRubberlover and Viole: the concept of dualism that also affects the female and male parts, the connection with nature, the exploration of darkness, and overcoming the dichotomy between body and soul. Speaking about bucolic contexts, the cover was recorded in a small mountain hut, on the Italian Alps, during a three-day session. “Flowers growing on a hill, dragonflies and daffodils…“.

Produced with Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle, I Hate My Village), Light Figures represented an important step forward and at the same time a change of direction – towards more analogical, minimal and heavy sounds – compared to what previously made by KICK. KICK’s current sound combines rough elements, “deviant” melodies and often obsessive rhythms in a sound that could ideally be defined “sweet noise“, a style on their own melting the noise with the softness of the atmosphere, without any limits of genre.
